Geopark Rock Route 4 - Glen Nevis
Details
This excellent interpretation board describes the origins of the Ben Nevis, the remains of a volcano that erupted over 400 million years ago during the collision of two continental plates. The board describes how Ben Nevis is composed of both igneous and Dalradian metamorphic rocks, including lava and two types of granites (inner and outer), and Leven shists, Ballachulish limestone and Glencoe quartz respectively. The board also explores the effects the last Ice Age had on the sculpturing of Glen Nevis, a classic glaciated U shaped valley, with roche moutonnées, such as Polldubh Crags, indicating the direction of flow.
The board is located in the car park at the Lower Falls, on the road between Glen Nevis and Fort William.
A very interesting and informative board with excellent interpretation of the local topography.
